From the President
Members of the Executive last week visited colleagues and colleges at the University of New England, meeting with Professor Peter Creamer (Chief Services Officer UNE); Ashwin Bhutani (Director, UNE Residential System); Heads of Colleges, including Dr Edwina Ridgway OAM (Duval and Smith & Drummond), Andrea Gledhill (Austin) and Caroline Pflaumer-Winer (Wright); and Dr David Daintree (Acting Master, St Albert’s). It was also a great pleasure for me to have dinner with the Chair of St Albert’s, Karl Schmude, and the newly appointed Master, Jason Lincoln. In all our positions as leaders of residential communities we face challenges and it is good to share with and support one another in these significant roles.
Our Forum is just over a month away and I do hope you will consider joining us if you have not already registered. Registration is free, and our website gives details of accommodation and payment for the dinners on Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 1 October.
On Friday 2 October we will launch a ‘Future Leaders Grant’ that will provide for two grants each calendar year, each one up to a sum of $2,000, to provide for deputies/deans to engage in a project, program, course and/or visits that will contribute to better collegiate life. Such projects or initiatives could include on-line programs, use of smart technology/social media etc.
With warmest wishes,
(Dr) Ian Walker

Census of Student Accommodation Providers
Among other things, the Census found that the purpose built student accommodation sector is now operating under a variety of ownership and management arrangements, with universities or other charities owning and managing about 57 per cent of the places in the sector and commercial entities (a rapidly growing part of the sector) owning and/or managing the other 43 per cent. The Census can be accessed here.
GST Tool & misreporting of student meals
UCA requested advice from Peter McDonald on the circumstances in which colleges and halls that have elected to use the ATO's Residential Colleges GST Tool to determine how much Goods and Services Tax (GST) to remit to the ATO, have a taxation liability if they fail to report bundled student meals to the Tool.
Catered colleges potentially exposed to this issue are those that have elected to use the GST Tool and have answered 'No' to question 17 in the contracts worksheets in cases where students are subject to mandatory charges for meals.
Please find a copy of Peter McDonald's advice here, or contact the Executive Officer to request a copy of this advice by return email.
Legal Employment Status of RA's
