From the President
In addition to our Memorandum of Understanding with AACUHO and our collaborative work in e.g. the 2014 National Census of Student Accommodation Providers and in the development of a Professional Standards guideline, our Vice-President, Rose Alwyn (pictured left), signed on behalf of UCA an Affiliation Agreement with ACUHO-I at its recent annual conference in Orlando, Florida. This mainly symbolic and relational partnership will allow for such things as access to research and project reports; the sharing among international affiliates of information, ideas, programs and procedures; and reciprocal rights of attendance at relevant meetings and conferences.
Within the increasingly developing and diverse student accommodation sector, our Association focuses on the particular needs, demands and expectations of headship/leadership in student residential communities, especially those of a collegiate nature. This, of course, is not confined to the older, more ‘traditional’, colleges but to all residential communities whose arrangements recognise the enormous value of learning as well as living within them – of the engagement of staff and students; of the inter-connections between the residence, the university and the wider community; of intellectual, social, cultural, sporting and, in a number, religious/spiritual activity; of leadership development; and perhaps most importantly, of close care and support for students in their academic and personal development and wellbeing. Leadership in these contexts is certainly challenging but also richly rewarding!
I do hope you might be able to attend our UCA Forum from the evening of 30 September to the afternoon of 2 October next at University House, ANU, to meet with colleagues, to share in conversations, and to consider a range of challenges and initiatives that both form and inform our tasks of leadership. Special guests will include the ANU Chancellor and former Foreign Minister, Prof Hon Gareth Evans AC QC, and ANU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ian Young AO; the Hon Phil Honeywood, CEO IEAA, will participate in a discussion about the National Strategy for International Education; and we will launch a ‘Future Leaders Grant’ to support and encourage Deputies/Deans in undertaking projects, programs and courses that will contribute to better collegiate life. A copy of the up-dated Forum program is available in this newsletter.
Members of the UCA Executive are very much looking forward to visiting our colleagues at UNE on 20/21 August, including meeting Jason Lincoln who has been appointed Master of St Albert’s College in succession to Geoff Johnston who is now Head of John XXIII College at ANU.
With warmest wishes,
(Dr) Ian Walker

GST Tool & misreporting of student meals
UCA requested advice from Peter McDonald on the circumstances in which colleges and halls that have elected to use the ATO's Residential Colleges GST Tool to determine how much Goods and Services Tax (GST) to remit to the ATO, have a taxation liability if they fail to report bundled student meals to the Tool.
Catered colleges potentially exposed to this issue are those that have elected to use the GST Tool and have answered 'No' to question 17 in the contracts worksheets in cases where students are subject to mandatory charges for meals.
Please find a copy of Peter McDonald's advice here, or contact the Executive Officer to request a copy of this advice by return email.
Legal Employment Status of RA's
