Dear Members
On Thursday, just two days after the Commission’s report, the University of New South Wales Centre for Human Rights launched their report On Safe Ground: A Good Practice Guide for Australian Universities.
A copy of the report can be downloaded here and you can read more about the report in The Guardian Australia. Dr Damian Powell and Professor Andrea Durbach have written an opinion piece also for The Guardian Australia which can be read here.
I am sure many of you are still considering aspects of the Commission’s report, making sense of the data and reading through the excerpts from the stories that formed part of the review.
Whilst many of us have policies and procedures in place, complemented by education and training initiatives both online and through our local rape and domestic violence services, the conversation extends beyond minimum standards and requires clear thinking and action on our part. Asking the hard questions about (inter alia) alcohol consumption, appropriate traditions and practices requires commitment and leadership on our part. We have the ‘why’ and we have the drive to tackle the ‘how’.
Our forum in Brisbane, on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th September, will provide the opportunity to discuss our strategy going forward, in particular our collaboration with Universities Australia, affirmed by Professor Margaret Gardner AO at the press conference on Monday.
Details of guest speakers from UA, the Commission and others will be confirmed in the coming weeks and in the meantime, please feel free to make contact with any member of the executive should you have any questions or ideas.
Best wishes,
Rose Alwyn
President
